Our Hockey Programs

Learn to Skate Program

This is a brand new program to help young male and female hockey players to learn to skate with full gear and a hockey stick.  It will include one on ice session per week for 22 weeks. Sessions will start in October and will continue until the end of March.

To be eligible to join this program the player must be 4 years old as of December 31, 2013.

Each player will be required to wear full hockey equipment on the ice and the emphasis will be on learning how to skate with the gear on and with a stick in their hands.

Parents do not go on the ice with the players but we may need volunteers to help the program instructors at various times during the year.

For more information about the program or to find out how you can get involved contact our VP of Initiation.

Initiation Program

The Initiation Program was developed by Hockey Canada and is designed to make a child’s first contact with hockey a safe and positive experience.  It is a structured, learn-to-play hockey program designed to introduce beginners of 5 - 7 years of age to the game's basic skills.  It enables participants to become contributing members of a team effort, develop self-confidence, and experience a sense of personal achievement.  These goals are achieved in an atmosphere of fun and fair play.

IP has several levels of instruction designed for beginning hockey players.  Each level represents a different set of skill progression.  At the beginning of the program, players are evaluated according to ability and placed in the appropriate program level.

Each level consists of lesson plans that follow a defined path of progression.  As players move through the program, they improve on both hockey skills and self-confidence.  The program emphasizes the basic hockey skills: skating, puck handling, passing and shooting.

Novice Hockey

The Novice Hockey program is for 7 and 8 year old boys and girls. It builds on what the players have learned from the Initiation Program with more of an emphasis on playing actual games. The development practices still focus on individual skills but they also start to get an introduction to individual and team tactics. Each player will be assigned to a beginner, intermediate or advanced team based the outcome of a preseason evaluation session.

Recreational Hockey

The Recreational Hockey program is structured to provide development and competition at the recreational level.  All recreational hockey is non-contact and the teams are generally not eligible for Provincial Championships.

We will offer Recreational Hockey in Atom, PeeWee, Bantam, Midget and Minor Junior this year. All of the teams will play in the Metro Minor Hockey League with other Minor Hockey organizations within HRM.

On-ice player evaluations will begin near the end of September.

For more information about the program or to find out how you can get involved contact our VP of Recreation.

Female Hockey

We will offer Female Hockey in Atom, PeeWee, Bantam and Midget this year, with each team, excluding Atom, having the opportunity to play in the South Conference Female Hockey League at the A or AA level.

The team designation will be determined by coaches and VP of Female Hockey at the start of the regular season with standings after early season categorization round being the final determining factor.  At this time Atom Female teams are not tiered by SCFHF.

SCFHF is also working on opportunities for all female players to play on a team at their appropriate skill level. More information on this will be provided to all female players once players are registered and details have been finalized by HNS.

While the IP and Novice Programs do not have a separate division for female, these programs are co-ed and all females are welcome to register. This past season there were also opportunities for female Novice and IP level players to participate in female only events as organized by HNS thru Female Council.  There will be more information available on such events for this season as they become available.

As per Section 503.1 of the Nova Scotia Female Hockey constitution, “any girl cut after trying out for a male team cannot displace a girl who decided to play female hockey only.”
